Probably the most emabarassing fact about MS Office is that you don’t really need it. At least installed on your comp. Except when you study specifically MS Office.

First, MS Office applications (though with stripped down functionality) are available for free on the Net (with free OneDrive basic account). The functionality, look, and feel of the on-line thing are more than sufficient for daily student work (spreadsheets, essays, tables, presentations). Moreover, some very useful applications such as MS Sway (also available with the account) are usually not even mentioned as belonging to the Office. Likewise, Office Lens (available on mobile for free) allows for the mobile phone scanned (well photographed) pages to be sent to Word and converted to Word documents.

Second, for the basics, Libre Office works just as good and, with the exception of some “geeky” files (macros, advanced functions) is 100% compatible with Office formats. You’d be surprised, but if you use Office on-line without compatible version of Office installed on your local computer, then MS Office creates open document formatted files (.odt, .ods, .odp) intended to be used with Libre/Open Office.
Third, though not that compatible as Libre Office, Google Docs (free) provide all functionality of Office needed for student’s daily chores. And that in easily comprehensible format. Moreover, Google classroom is a lightweight and easy to use tool for creating and running on-line courses. Comes in handy these corona days …
