Raiders vs Browns recap
Brandon LaFell Jersey , Final Score 45-42: Gruden 2.0 era gets first win in overtime shootout against Browns Welcome to the recap of the Raiders game at home against the Cleveland Browns. Oakland started off the game with the ball first, a theme in each game so far this season. Both teams traded off 3 and outs to begin the game, but the Raiders broke the pattern in a big way. Gareon Conley intercepted a Baker Mayfield pass and returned it 36 yards for a TD. The pick of the Browns rookie QB who was the first overall selection in this years draft made the score 7-0 Raiders. The rookie showed why everyone was so excited for him after last week’s debut when he got the ball back though. Shaking off the interception Mayfield led the Browns all the way down to the Raiders one yard line on a 15 play, 68 yard drive. They couldn’t get it in the end zone thanks to a 6 yard loss on 3rd and 1 on a WR screen that Arden Key made the big tackle on. They did get a field goal though to make the score 7-3 Raiders.Oakland’s next drive started promising with a couple of nice completions to Amari Cooper, however it ended with a Matt McCrane missed field goal off the dirt due to a botched hold from P Johnny Townsend. To make matters worse the Browns 2nd round rookie RB took the very next play 63 yards for a touchdown. The Browns went for 2 but a dropped pass made the try no good so the score after that was 9-7 Browns.Oakland only managed one first down before having to punt it back to the Browns again. This time it took more than 1 play before the Browns scored, it took 4. They went 70 yards in those 4 plays, mostly thanks to a 49 yard touchdown reception for TE Darren Fells who caught the ball between two diving Raiders defenders on the play. This time they did convert the 2-point play on a run to the outside from Duke Johnson to make the score was 17-7 Browns.Credit to the Oakland offense with a big touchdown drive of their own in response to the Browns 2nd quick strike. They nearly had their touchdown very quickly on a lofting deep ball to a wide open Martavis Bryant but Bryant lost track of the ball and dropped it. Instead of scoring on what would have been a 53 yard TD reception, they physically dominated the drive instead with a couple of classic beast mode plays from Marshawn Lynch and a nice catch from TE Lee Smith who landed completely upside down onto his head. The touchdown went to Amari Cooper from 8 yards out on the 8 play, 75 yard drive to make the score 17-14.The Oakland defense forced a punt on the Browns next drive and it looked like the Raiders offense was going to tack on at least a field goal at the end of the half. Instead with just under 30 seconds Derek Carr’s pass was tipped off the hands of Jared Cook and intercepted by Cleveland safety E.J. Gaines which kept the score 17-14 at the half.Cleveland received the ball to start out the 2nd half and again Baker Mayfield lead them on an impressive scoring drive. One play in particular stood out when he managed to complete a pass on 3rd and 1 while being engulfed by two Raiders defenders which would have ended the drive just outside of field goal range. The Oakland defense again played strong in the red zone though and forced a 28 yard field goal for Cleveland which made the score 20-14 Browns. Oakland quickly got to midfield on a beautiful 26 yard catch and run on a slant to Martavis Bryant. Too bad the very next play was another Derek Carr interception on a lofted pass to Bryant along the sideline that was easily undercut by Browns cornerback Damarious Randall who returned it to the Oakland 31. The next play was a Gareon Conley pass interference penalty at the Oakland 7 followed two plays later by a touchdown reception from Jarvis Landry. They again went for 2 and got it on a Duke Johnson run to make the score 28-14. Oakland’s next drive went no where thanks to a Seth Roberts dropped. Rookie Punter Johnny Townsend pinned the Browns deep at their own 7 with a beautiful 49 yard punt though and on the first play of the drive Raiders DT Mo Hurst forced a Baker Mayfield fumble. It was recovered by Jonathan Hankins at th 7 and the Raiders scored a touchdown 3 plays later. The touchdown came on 3rd down to Jared Cook and made the score 28-21 Cleveland. The two teams traded punts back and forth over the next 3 drives before the Raiders offense got something going again. They got a huge play on a Marshawn Lynch sweep that went 52 yards (thanks in large part to some great blocking from Martavis Bryant on the play) and got Oakland inside the Cleveland 20.Unfortunately they wouldn’t get much closer after that and settled for the 29 yard field goal which made the score 28-24 Cleveland. The 2nd play of the Browns next drive was a botched snapped fumble which was recovered by DT Johnathan Hankins. Hankins’s 2nd fumble recovery of the game gave the Raiders the ball at the Cleveland 20 and 2 plays later Oakland scored their first 4th quarter touchdown of the year. The touchdown was a 19 yard dart to Jordy Nelson and gave the Raiders the lead 31-28.Oakland’s defense forced a quick 3 and out before Dwayne Harris returned the Browns punt 49 yards to give Oakland great field position again at the Cleveland 29. They went 3 and out despite the great field position but they were already close enough for a field goal attempt. This time the dirt wasn’t a factor and the 44 yard field goal was good and made the score 34-28. Another big play by the Browns on the next drive for Cleveland, this time it was a 59 yard catch and run by 4th round rookie Antonio Callaway got the Browns down to the Oakland 1 yard line. Carlos Hyde punched it in from there, and it turned out the Browns do have a kicker that they chose to use for the extra point. Understandable considering it gave the Browns the lead back at 35-34 with just over 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter.Oakland went 3 and out on their drive but it should have been worse as Derek Carr clearly fumbled on their 3rd down play. They got lucky though and the refs inexplicably called him down in the grasp despite the call being knocked out before Carr was even contacted. It didn’t matter anyway though because yet again the Raiders were gashed for a big TD play on a 41 yard TD run from Nick Chubb. The touchdown made the score 42-34 with 4:20 left in the game. The Raiders got a couple of big plays themselves in receptions from Martavis Bryant and Amari Cooper got them down to the Cleveland 11. They couldn’t get the touchdown though, a miscommunication between Carr and Cooper on 4th down caused a turnover on downs with 1:51 left. The Raiders had 3 timeouts left so they still had a chance but needed to come up with a stop. It looked like a sure first down for the Browns on 3rd and 2 but the play was shockingly overturned and forced a Browns punt. The Raiders started their final drive with 1:28 left at their own 46. They got down to the Browns 20 after a defensive holding penalty followed by a 19 yard completion to Jared Cook. Then 2 plays later Jalen Richard made some nifty moves on a 18 yard catch and run down to the 6 Lee Smith Jersey , followed by a Jared Cook touchdown reception on the next play. They still needed a 2 point conversion and got it on an extremely tightly contested catch from Jordy Nelson to tie the game at 42.The Browns had just 30 seconds left in regulation but just needed a field goal. They quickly got into Raiders territory with receptions of 11 and 15 yards, but then Baker Mayfield made a bad decision to go deep. The ball was intercepted by Reggie Nelson and the Raiders kneeled the rest of the clock. That’s the end of regulation so off to overtime we go, tied at 42.The Raiders won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball first in the overtime. They got a big 36 yard play to Amari Cooper on 1st down to get the Raiders down to the Cleveland 35. They got down to the 28 but a 3rd down sack knocked them back to the 32 fans forced a 50 yard field goal attempt. Matt McCrane’s kick sailed left and was no good.Cleveland took over at their own 40 and only needed a field goal for the victory. The Raiders couldn’t give up much and didn’t, they held them to a 3 and out thanks to a great 3rd down pass deflection from Rashaan Melvin. After the punt the Raiders started at their own 20 and this time a field goal can win it for Oakland. They quickly fit to midfield with a great diving catch from Jared Cook for 24 yards. Then they got a 9 yard completion and a QB sneak for a huge 1st down. They followed that up with a 14 yard pass to Amari Cooper and an 11 yard Marshawn Lynch run to the Cleveland 14. They hit the 29 yard game winning field goal to win 45-42. His departure left the team with Lee Smithand Darren Waller as the top two tight ends. They combined last season for 148 yards, so help is needed. In a free agent class lacking in top tight end talent (aside from Cook), the Raiders hadn’t dabbled in it yet. Today, they are hosting free agent tight end Luke Willson (not the actor) according to Adam Caplan.Willson isn’t a great receiving threat either. He had just 87 yards receiving for the Lions last season. What he has is familiarity with Tom Cable, having played the first five seasons of the career in Seattle while Cable was the offensive line coach there. And since tight end is an extension of the Oline, that familiarity could be important. The last two free agents to be reported as paying the Raiders a visit, both signed. We’ll see if Willson will do the same.Follow @LeviDamien
